Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone talks about her tried and tested health and beauty tips.

Flawless skin fundas

I am not much of a make up user and stick to the basics like moisturiser and lip balm. I also do not go for regular facials but I do indulge in clean ups once in a while. Almost as a ritual, every week I like to luxuriate in a relaxing body massage with lukewarm coconut or baby oil. It relaxes and rejuvenates me like nothing else.

Water the wonder potion

Water acts like a miracle to flush away all the toxins from the body and I do not mind drinking gallons of it. It keeps the skin supple. I have also heard that a glass of warm water with honey, taken first thing in the morning, not only cleanses your system but also helps cut excess flab.

Fitness is the key

I think working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. I try and work out as often as possible; since I am regularly traveling, it becomes difficult to have a daily work out routine but whenever I hit the gym I do cardio and light weights. I have an athletic body, thanks to my years dedicated to badminton but I do concentrate on butt regions.

Golden rules of dieting

A healthy diet is like the first step towards a fit body. I take a balanced diet with carbs and proteins, and am very particular about dietary proportions. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important of them all. Since south Indian food can be heavy sometimes, I try and balance it by say, having a dosa minus the potato filling; if I am having eggs, I take only the white portion and if I have idlis I substitute coconut chutney with a pudina chutney.

Stay sexy secrets

I am a firm believer in natural mediums for skin care. One should never try to overglob any products as I think the more you fiddle with your skin, the worse it gets. Just resort to the basics of skincare and witness the splendid results.

The Makeup Story...

Your face is your fortune and therefore make up is of prime importance. Here are a few things you can keep in mind as you select and apply your makeup.

CONCEALER: It can help hide dark circles, redness and blemishes. Used with foundation, it helps to achieve the flawless look. You can choose from liquid or stick concealers. Remember that concealer must be applied BEFORE your foundation. Choose a concealer that closely matches your skin tone, dot it on the trouble spots and blend well.

FOUNDATION: When selecting your foundation, test it on your jawline. This will tell you immediately if it blends with your skin. You can apply foundation either on your bar skin on after using a moisturizer. Use your fingertips or a sponge. After dotting your face with foundation, remember to always blend it outwards. A matte finish gives medium to full coverage and delivers a no-shine look. A natural finish is meant to look like you’re not wearing any make up. It has light to medium finish and a non-powdery finish.

BLUSH ON: Powder blush comes in a traditional compact and is applied with a brush. It provides a light, matte finish. Budge-Proof blush is cream-to-powder formula that is applied with a sponge applicator and lasts for hours.

EYE SHADOW: A good eye shadow, which suits you, tends to enhance your look. Every woman can wear lavender and violet on the eyes, regardless of skin tone, because purple tones are a combination of warm red and cool blue and they flatter the skin. Besides this, green and pink eye shadows also look good.

MASCARA: The current trend is a dramatic, open-eyed look, which can make you look extremely sensuous, says Deepika Padukone, brand ambassador, Maybeline New York. Mascara darkens and extends the tips of the eye lashes, making them look longer. It also separates each individual lash for a clean and natural look. While purchasing a mascara, remember that it must be ophthalmologist/dermatologist/allergy rested and safe for sensitive eyes/compact lens wearers.

LIPS: The skin on the lips is extremely delicate and needs pampering. When deprived of care, it is susceptible to dehydration and cracking. So make sure that you do not compromise when buying lipsticks.

Now that you have learnt the magic of ‘perfect’ make up… be prepared for envious glances and swooning figures…

Deepika tells us how she keeps herself fit!

What do you understand by fitness?

For me fitness is not about being skinny or slim. It’s about being healthy from inside also. I think one should combine exercising along with eating the right kind of food-healthy wholesome food.

And healthy wholesome food would be?

For me it would be say - for lunch I’d have roti and sabzi and some dal salad and rice.

Do you exercise at all?

Yes I go to the gym whenever I can. Now I have joined the Sykes gym in Andheri and I do make it a point when I am travelling to work out in the hotel gym.

Do you work with a trainer?

In Bangalore I do have a trainer and here at the gym too there are trainers who guide you but otherwise I don’t work with a trainer.

Do you practice yoga?

Yes I have just started yoga-I do it in the evenings. I go to a school.

Any other form of fitness that you follow?

No. Just this: If a person is looking at losing weight-just diet or just exercise won’t help you have to combine the two. I combine cardio with weight training. If I can’t go to the gym walk twice a day half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening.

Any sports?

Now I don’t play but until two years back I played basketball and even some baseball for the state. I am a sporty person but get less time now.

You are a full time model?

Yes and I am doing my graduation by correspondence.

How fit have you been in the past?

I was fitter when I was younger- when I played badminton I used to get up early and run for 40 minutes and do heavy weight training. I was fitter when I played. But it helps me now in terms of flexibility.

What food do you eat?

During shoots I eat regular ghar ka khana (home made food) with dal roti sabzi raita salad and some non vegetarian. But if it’s studio food then I stick to idlis and very light food.

Breakfast - I can’t do without breakfast. I have a huge breakfast - sometimes we have non vegetarian - sometimes upma, idlis, dosa, parathas - whatever it is I eat a lot of it.

For lunch I have two rotis and some vegetable and salad and some rice and dal so that makes it a balanced diet and it covers everything. I avoid rice and non vegetarian at night.

What do you binge on?

Thai food and chocolate desserts.

What tips would you give the readers?

There is a misconception that if you do weights you become bulky – that’s not true. Please combine exercise and diet. Just one does not help you to either lose weight or remain healthy. Think healthy and have a positive mind set...

Dance has been another defining influence for Deepika...

Jazz, Bharat Natyam (“in my modelling days, this dance training gave me grace and poise; today, it helps to keep me fit”), Kathak; the lissome lass firmly believes in the positive impact of extra-curricular activities. “I think it's very important for all kids to learn some form of sport, dance and music.”

Beauty tips by Deepika Padukone

Runway queen-turned-Bollywood star Deepika Padukone speaks about the secret of her radiance.

What keeps you looking this good?

My daily skincare regimen involves cleansing, toning and moisturising. Healthy skin needs mild cleansing, for which I use gentle soaps. I use products that are mild and do not strip my skin of essential proteins. I am not much of a make-up user and stick to basics like a moisturiser, lip balm and a neutral foundation.

I don’t go for regular facials, but do indulge in clean-up sessions once in a while. Also, I am very particular about taking off the make-up before I go to bed. As a ritual, I like to luxuriate in a relaxing body massage with lukewarm coconut or baby oil every week. I think working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. It is also equally important to maintain a high emotional quotient and a positive attitude towards life.

How do you take time out for yourself after a hectic work schedule?

I take care of myself with homemade remedies and a balanced diet. Working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. I try and work out as often as possible. Since, I travel regularly, it becomes difficult for me to have a daily workout routine, but whenever I hit the gym I do cardio training and some light weights.

Thanks to my years dedicated to badminton, I have an athletic body. Also, since relaxation matters, no matter how busy my shooting schedules are, I always keep some quality time aside for family and friends.

What is your beauty advice for all the girls out there?

A healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet and the correct skincare and fitness regimen all go hand in hand to make possible a beautiful you today and tomorrow. I am a firm believer in skincare the natural way. I am careful about using skincare products that are the right mix of nature and science.

One should never try to go overboard on any products, as I think the more you try to be experimental with your skin, the worse it gets. Just stick to the basics of skincare and witness the splendid results. There are a host of natural effective products available that are a better bet than harsh chemically enhanced ones.

How important is a healthy diet for looking beautiful?

A healthy diet is the first step towards a healthy and fit body. I take a balanced diet with carbs and proteins, and I’m very particular about dietary proportions. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important of them all. I try to keep my meals balanced and simple.

What are your reasons for being associated with the brands that you represent?

I associate myself with a brand that I can identify with. I have felt in tune with these brands and hence the association. Brands which signify style, good looks, youth, fun and have a universal appeal are the ones that I associate myself with. (Deepika endorses Fiama Di Wills, Kingfisher, Maybelline, Levi’s Strauss, Tissot, Pepsi.) I am also very conscious of the quality of the brands I endorse.

The Look: Deepika Padukone

One of our lovely readers asked for a breakdown of Deepika Padukone’s makeup at a recent event - this is a wonderful choice for a breakdown as Deepika (or more likely her makeup artist) showcases the recent trend of the bronze smokey eye that was all over the Fall 2008 runways. Deepika complements the earthy tones on her eyes with a pretty wine lip color. To get the look:

Eyes: Three different earth tones are used on Deepika’s eyes to give them dimension and to prevent muddiness.

First, sweep a shimmery bronze or copper shadow such as the darker shade in NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Isolde all over the lids until just past the crease. In the outer third of the lids, with lids closed, apply a dark brown shadow such as MAC Shadow in Tempting in the shape of a side triangle. Blend the bronze shadow with the dark brown shadow. Wet a liner brush and apply the dark brown shadow as eyeliner on both the upper and lower lashes. Apply a light gold or champagne shadow such as the lighter color in NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Isolde in the inner corners of the eyes. I included a picture of Deepika looking down below so you can really see where the different colored shadows go.

Finish eyes with black mascara. Also, Deepika’s eyebrows are always very neat and clean. Use a brown pencil and gel such as Revlon Brow Stylist in Dark Brown to fill in and brush eyebrows.

Cheeks: Use a fan brush to very lightly apply a wine colored blush such as MAC Powder Blush Plum Foolery to the cheeks. Remember to use a very light hand - Deepika’s look is one where she is glowing rather than blushing.

Lips: Deepika has a wine color on her lips but it is applied lightly so skip the liner. Apply a creamy wine lipstick such as MAC Lipstick in Plum to the lips.

Deepika Padukone makeup tips
Make-up is a must for every actress, especially if she happens to be the “international ambassadress” for Maybelline. Here are Deepika’s tips, on make-up and more:
• Choose the right foundation shade. If you have great skin, don’t dab unnecessarily, use it only under the eyes and on blemishes — as concealer. Deepika recommends, Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Makeup.
• Use a mascara, she recommends Maybelline Lash Stylist Waterproof Mascara. The brush is fantastic and adds volume naturally.
• Suck in your cheeks and apply the blush, she recommends Maybelline Expert Wear Blush. The brush that comes with the blush, it's bristles are soft; clean it after use.
• Evening make-up need not always be dramatic and over-the-top. If you like the natural look, then stick by it at night too, just add more mascara.
• Never put too many good things together; they all get lost. Let few great things shine through.

Deepika's Take on Beauty, Fitness and Make-up

She’s gorgeous, successful and stunningly beautiful. Compliment her about her looks and she says matter-of-factly, “Beauty is merely skin deep. Yes, I need to look good but I am not overly obsessed with being beautiful. In fact, I am quite happy with what God’s given me. Beauty to me is basically looking after myself.”

Gorgeous Skin: “As an actress , makeup is my best friend. But when I am not shooting, I avoid wearing makeup. My skin needs to breathe so I stick to the basics like moisturizer and lip balm. My daily skincare regimen involves cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Healthy skin needs mild cleansing, for which I use gentle soaps. I also keep my skin clean by going for regular cleanups. I am really not into facials so I mostly avoid them. Also, I am very particular about removing my makeup before I go to bed.”

Body Beautiful: “A healthy body should be a priority for everyone – I make it mine too! My dad (former badminton champ Prakash Padukone) has inculcated in me the value of being fit. I start off with a rejuvenating weekly body massage with lukewarm coconut or baby oil. I also drink a lot of water as the body needs proper hydration. It also keeps the skin supple.”

Fit Facts: “I work out as often as possible. Since I am regularly traveling, it becomes difficult to have a daily workout routine but whenever I hit the gym, I do cardio and light weights. I have an athletic body, thanks to the years I dedicated to badminton, but I do concentrate on my butt area.”

Eating Right: “I absolutely love food but I always make sure I have a balanced diet with enough carbs and proteins, and am also very particular about dietary proportions. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important of them all. I love eating South Indian food but since it can be heavy sometimes, I try and balance it by say, having a dosa minus the potato filling. If I am having eggs, I eat egg-whites only and if I have idlis, I substitute coconut chutney with mint chutney.”

Beauty Buzz: “Simple and quick! A healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet and the correct skincare and fitness regimen all go hand in hand to make possible a beautiful you today and tomorrow. I am a firm believer in skincare... the natural way. One should never try to go overboard on any products, as I think the more you experiment with your skin, the worse it gets. Always stick to the basics of skincare.”

Make-up Fixes: “Makeup artistes can give you any amount of makeup tips but just remember one should never put too many good things together; they all get lost. Let few great things shine through. For instance, if I enhance my eyes with kohl, I keep my lips bare or just dab some lip balm. And honesty, the less the makeup, the less plastic you look.”
